Overview:
SS-31, also known as elamipretide, is a mitochondria-targeting peptide
designed to interact with cardiolipin, a phospholipid located in the inner
mitochondrial membrane.
Proposed Mechanisms:
- Stabilization of mitochondrial membranes
- Reduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production
- Improvement of mitochondrial bioenergetics
- Protection against oxidative stress–induced cellular injury
Research Areas:
- Mitochondrial myopathies
- Heart failure and ischemia-reperfusion injury
- Age-related mitochondrial dysfunction
- Kidney disease models
Evidence Status:
Elamipretide has undergone Phase II and III clinical trials for various
mitochondrial and cardiovascular conditions. While promising in certain
subgroups, results have been mixed depending on indication.
